Twist and crawl (smoke I)

Flash experiments reloaded - Smoke

I will be posting a series of smoke pictures for the next days. If you feel bored at some point, just say so. I kinda like these pictures.

Update: inverted version http://spoon.shutterchance.com/photoblog/63651.htm

Beautiful! Amazing how you've captured such light on something so insubstantial. Looking forward to more of this!
spoon: Thank you smile
Superb. I suppose u wouldn't share the secret of how u got this shot, right ? smile
spoon: This is the basic setup (for all you strobe fans): black background (in my case, a black t-shirt spread on an an armchair's back), about 1 meter from camera. Camera pointing right at the tshirt. Flash unit boxed and somewhere to the right (fired via pc synch cord). A cigarette in an ashtray about 70cm from camera, between the lens and the background. My Canon was connected to the PC the whole time and I was remotely firing it (just by clicking the mouse) and also remotely adjusting the aperture, mostly. Focusing was a big problem and for this I had my girlfriend hold her finger where the smoke would be, focus on it, then turn to manual focus and then light up the cigarette. Then start shooting smile

Lovely shot!
spoon: I posted some hints about the setup as a reply for Iulian. Thanks for dropping by.

If you listen to Enya or Einaudi it's all a bit similar but different enough to listen to for a while, so go ahead and put up a few more.

If they're anything like this one they'll be aesthetically pleasing and it'll be interesting to try to find shapes in them. This one looks like an elegant lady arching her back, facing right, with a bouffant hairdo.

Red ShMood ... turn it portrait.
spoon: Now I got it. Yeah, maybe I'll try making some of them horizontal. Thanks for the comment.
